in St Moritz as the best night club in the world. If they are out voted, they will ascribe the loss to demographics and ignorance and will hold out on their conviction to their dying day.  I think I may be one of those unflinching disciples and I have been to a few night clubs in my life. I am not a member, but I have the context to admit that there are truly no places quite like it. The famed devotees of St Moritz may just be right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cavernous and yet cohesive chalet is a microcosm of St Moritz, a town known from the outside for its prosperity and glamour, but from the inside for its frivolity and loose governance. If there is a decadence in town, it is dwarfed by the lightness of touch. Dracula is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang meeting Studio 54 and when I see 85-year-olds dancing energetically and in time with their grandson’s girlfriend and no one batting an eyelid, I know I have found an antidote to oppressive woke culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was Gunter Sachs who put St Moritz on the party map. When he moved there with his wife Brigitte Bardot, he wanted to have his own club and so Dracula was born. On his passing, the club’s governance passed to his son Rolf - a man of great charm, formidable intellect and creative sensibility. It was Rolf who gave me permission to bring a film crew into this most exclusive of clubs and I was determined to reward his faith - there would be no second chance. Dracula doesn’t do film crews.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I am asked about the vibe in St Moritz, many are looking for the negative angles that come from observing privilege and excess. In this case in the Diamond Belle Saloon in Durango, Colorado, my instincts were that it would appeal more if the frame was busy because my experience with this famous old wild west bar is that it is always something of a gathering place for all those who like a drink. It is how bars should be and is celebrated as such. I want the audience to say; “I wish I was in that bar that night” or even “we need more interesting people in our bar”. This frame sweats and that was always my intent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnyone close to my camera had to be characters out of a story book and play to the lore of the wild west. I want to exaggerate not dumb things down as that helps the storyteller. In a staged image such as this, there is no need to ask permission to be creative; in fact, it is a necessary precondition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCara Delevingne’s face is so strong and powerful that I knew there was no room for another girl on her same focal plane, but there would be room for a black wolf and then a menacing poker player. The background could then look after itself, but I wanted to pay homage to the saloon girls who are synonymous with the bar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCara loves this image - which always matters to me. She is a gift for a photographer and not to fully capitalise on her eyes and her vibe would be a rookie history of sport and New York played the lead role in its final denouement. When McEnroe defeated Borg in four sets in the US Open Final of 1981 at Flushing Meadows, Borg left the stadium immediately and never played in a major tournament again. He was just 25 years old.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe late 1970s and early 1980s were heady days for the US Open. New York was rocking to a disco beat and American men and women dominated the higher seedings. In the latter stages of the men’s tournament, McEnroe would often face fellow countrymen such as Jimmy Connors and Vitas Gerulaitis. McEnroe and Gerulaitis, both New Yorkers and good friends, were known to head for Studio 54 once their night matches were over at Flushing Meadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy plan was to celebrate this era by hosting a little gathering on a New York subway car from the same period. The way to do this was to hire the New York Transit Museum for the day and dress one of the period cars as if it were 1981. I had my lead in the wonderfully unique John McEnroe; a formidable and gritty New Yorker who wears a subway look with ease. I asked him to bring his guitar which, of course, like a tennis racket, he plays left-handed and plays well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday’s McEnroe was joined on his subway ride by characters all styled in the same era. Borg was a necessary extra somewhere in the carriage and we found a strong look alike. He was joined by a couple of Pan Am stewardesses and then, of course, it being New York, we had to make reference to the Village People. I think that’s about right - it’s not easy at 10,000 feet in the rainforest, and the best of my work now hangs in the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Fund in Kinigi, Rwanda. I am glad they don’t display my average pictures, of which there are many. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI recently had the chance to work on a fundraiser with another great American conservationist - Ramona Bass - a legendary figure in Fort Worth - who has offered a sanctuary for displaced Western Lowland Gorillas for many years. The male adult Lowland gorillas have less hair than mountain gorillas and, as a result, look more human. The most famous of these under Ramona’s care is a 33-year-old silverback called Elmo, who can be photographed from a distance at certain times of the day. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe is a handsome boy that carries a look of authority. We prepared for many months as it was clear to me that if we were to pay homage to The Wolf of Wall Street, we had to do it well. There was no point in doing it in a casual way - after all, Martin Scorsese is one of my heroes and his framing is so exceptional that we had to be at the top of our game not to materially underachieve in any recreation. It was the biggest production of my career.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe location of the abandoned office in Simi Valley outside Los Angeles was ideal for most of the cast - including Jordan Belfort - the real Wolf of Wall Street, but not so ideal for the wolves, as there was no working air conditioning inside. This meant importing huge AC units to keep the animals cool. The green room on the side of the dealing floor was transformed into a giant fridge for the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe final image is one of the most satisfying of my career. I wanted as many references to the film as possible - Cameron Dallas eating the goldfish, Jordan with his pen, the marching band, the dollar notes and the glitter. Both models - Kate Bock and Daniela Braga - smashed it in their roles, not easy with so much going on and a wolf charging down the table. Both Kate and Dany are at the top of their game and pivotal to this photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSomeone once said that the best pictures can be looked at for a very long time. On that level, this image wins. However, the key for me was to find out what the world’s most celebrated actor thought of this one snap shot in time. Without his approval, this photograph would lose some of its relevance. I was proud when he told me that it captured the very essence of Belfort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe did it and I feel that we left nothing in the bucket in the conception and the execution. We called last year’s photograph of the mountain men at the bar “The Usual Suspects” as that is exactly what they were. Some of those men rarely leave the warmth of The Pioneer Bar in Virginia City throughout winter - in fact they hibernate there. It proved such a popular image and has sold out across the world - in some cases raising huge sums for charity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, when we went back this year, we thought it would be fun to have an additional crew member - Cindy Crawford.  The word juxtaposition is over used in narrative, but I think we can get away with it here. The old boys may drink a bit and smoke a bit of weed, but they were on their very best behaviour that day - which is essentially still medieval. An international icon joining their party was not something they bargained for and at least one cowboy convinced himself it was the weed. We had to call the image “The Unusual Suspects” as a nod to her presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition, which I could control, had to be spot on, but there is no way that I could control the wolf. It is a low percentage game this and we only came away with one shot - but we got it. Cindy looks fantastically glamorous and a little “bad ass” in her role, but, as always, it is the mountain men that take away the Oscars. We were not able to close the road down and had to wing it slightly at the end of the day, but “stolen” images are often the best.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are many constituent parts to this image and I am, as usual, reminded again, just how good our respective teams are when working under pressure. Not only is it 100 degrees outside; we are on a main road deep in the Californian desert and there are tourists swarming the area around Roy’s not quite believing their luck at seeing Cindy and yet we managed to pull this off. Just a fraction of a second, but that is all it takes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was a 20-hour day that day, but one of the best we have had together and a huge amount of the credit goes to our production teams. It’s the small things like Cindy’s hair that make such a difference to this photograph and the forecourt of Roy’s is no studio, it’s a working gas station. I raise my glass to Cindy’s hair stylist - the legend that is Peter Savic. I know working in an arid and sometimes windy desert is not his preferred environment, but he is a total professional.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective offered by a standard lens is pleasing to the human eye as that is what we are used to day in day out; the camera lens sees what we see. But there are challenges in this frame as I needed to include both her feet and the Roy’s sign and yet I could not afford for her face to be too far from the camera. Only a few angles were going to work and then we also had the props behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut she knows exactly what she is doing and how to help me with my job. It was cinema ahead of its time and I admit to watching that sequence more times than would be considered normal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring COVID, we played on this storyline near my home in Devon, but in 2023 I drew up a more ambitious story that would be played out in the isolated desert community of Amboy, California. We had scouted the area intensely and knew our angles, our light and most of all the landowners.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe premise was to style the set as if we were indeed in the late 1950s and we recognised that we had a strong backdrop, as Roy’s Cafe is one of the treasure trove authentic landmarks of Route 66. From Roy’s looking east, the Mother Road stretches straight to the horizon in a way that plays to our preconceptions of Americana road trips. We then brought in a 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Vignale Spyder as the lead car and dressed the background with a Ford pick-up from the late 1940s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut this was mere window dressing and my sense was that in order to transcend, this story required some heavyweight components. Flatteringly, Cindy Crawford agreed to be the main protagonist and I knew she would give Cary Grant a run for his money. Cindy is the best of the best and it is always a huge honour to work with her. Ascribe her a role and a look and she will nail it every time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut we also needed a plane. Amboy has a tiny runway strip and towards the end of the day, when the traffic is lighter, a good pilot can flirt with the tarmac of Route 66. I needed a pilot whom I could trust and I found him in Greg Caldwell, who slightly reminded me of the heroic crop spraying pilot from the movie Independence Day. We had worked with him before and there didn’t seem much to trouble Greg - not even his plane’s aerial proximity to a $10m Ferrari or, more importantly, one of the world’s most identifiable and revered women.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a film noir feel to the image and I think the relatively flat light helps the rather menacing mood. But the credit lies with both Greg and Cindy who did exactly what I asked them to do .\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI guess we may have broken some new ground here as well as a few rules. The rock formations and the trees make it a most distinctive playground for the filmmaker. An added bonus is that whilst the main roads through the park boast modern tarmac surfaces, there are some wonderfully timeless single lane dust tracks cutting through the scorched terrain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn our early morning scouting trips to Joshua Tree, these dust roads were the focus of our attention, because a road often offers the lead component around which to build a story. I found a spot that, when looking west in the early morning light, offered so much, including the disconnect of snow on the distant mountain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, we were thrown a curve ball by the light. As many who have travelled to Joshua Tree will testify, the visuals are at their best within an hour of sunrise and an hour of sunset. This meant a 3.30 am start for Cindy Crawford and her team in order for her to be on set by 6 am and she is known for her punctuality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy narrative was simply that a girl returning from Vegas, has either run out of money, run out of fuel, or both, but despite this misfortune, she cuts a figure of lackadaisical, carefree sexuality. It may, of course, have been those attributes that drew her to Sin City in the first place, but that is for the viewer to interpret. I can only show, not tell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like to shoot with an historic period in mind rather than in the modern day as it adds another layer to a still photograph. I find the best results are when the lighting is soft and even, like on this cloudy morning. Founded in 1854, it seemingly hasn’t changed much in 170 years and if the walls could talk, it would - “to be sure” - be one very long monologue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe walls are a museum of the Irish in Manhattan and the joint has such a discernible vibe that Martin Scorsese and his crew did much of their press briefings for The Gangs of New York in the front bar. In the Great War, young soldiers heading to Europe in 1917, left a turkey wish bone on a wire above the bar; the bones of those who never returned still hang there in front of various JFK memorabilia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pub has been in the same Irish family hands for three generations and I was honoured to discover that the current custodian - Gregory - was a collector of my work. Naively, we tried to visit him on St Patrick’s Day, but couldn’t get within 200 yards of the pub. The next day, we had more luck and I was charmed not just by Gregory, but by the whole vibe of the joint. It is a truly special place and I knew I had to film there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI didn’t have long to wait for the opportunity as John McEnroe - one of the most loved and talented of all American sporting legends and a truly uncompromising New Yorker - had agreed to be filmed by me in the city. Although the McEnroes are of Irish origin and therefore McSorley’s seemed like an appropriate destination, the reason that the location made sense went far deeper than that; John personifies the gritty, uncompromising New Yorker who fights for what he believes to be right - he always has. My leaning was the sawdust laden floors of McSorley’s offered a far more appropriate platform to film this blunt, quintessential, street fighter than some smart Upper East side Italian restaurant or cocktail bar. We were going Irish and tough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMcEnroe’s most famous rebuke to an umpire was the “you cannot be serious” line and I thought those words somewhere in McSorley’s - no matter how incongruous they would be to the rest of the décor - would complement John well. I asked him to bring his Gibson guitar and not a tennis racket, as music now defines him as much tennis and besides, we did give a nod to his rival Bjorn Borg in the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were on a creative roll now and I sensed we could add further to the visual overload. The band Village People seemed like a good additive, after-all, we were in the Village and they were of the McEnroe Borg era. Then, since we were playing to a sense of community, I thought we may as well throw in a lady of the night. Luckily Vivian from Pretty Woman was on hand to help.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a bar full of Village People, which is what McSorley’s presumably was in 1854. McEnroe looks pure Rock and Roll bad ass. The once silver mining town, nestling at 9000 feet, became an unlikely Rock and Roll town drawing established and aspiring creatives from every corner of the United States. It may have been a growing haven for the Hollywood elite, but it welcomed talent and bad behaviour more than it did wealth. I have a sense that in the 1970s Aspen was as loosely governed as it was back in 1880 when it was a frontier mining town, that would be quite an achievement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe model - Kate Bock - reminds me a little of Heather Graham in Austin Powers in this throwback shot, taken late one winter afternoon from Hunter Creek Road. She plays a confident hippy, flying solo with ease and was made for this kind of shot. Meanwhile, the yellow of the Porsche works well against the flat winter light. Pleasingly they have been hugely popular pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2022, we returned to a dealing room to film the most challenging of the ideas; the “I am Not Fxxxking Leaving” scene. The concept was clear in my head, but I was wrestling with the execution, as, in a still image, it is impossible to have both the speaker and the crowd facing the camera. The idea of the back of Jordan’s head being at the front of the frame had no appeal, meanwhile excluding him from the picture altogether would weaken the narrative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the crowd was simple to preconceive; an energy charged orgy of 1994 brokers celebrating the defiance of their leader. I wanted explicit references to the excesses of the era and the film and this demanded a testosterone jammed dealing floor hosting flying dollars, ticker tape, rubber dolls, call girls and marching bands. I always think that it is counter intuitive to downplay parody. We even managed to sneak in a Steve Madden shoe box.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trick with Jordan was to have him on a big TV screen facing the same way as everyone else, this way the full story could be told without valuable inches being occupied by the back of Belfort's head. The ticker on CNBC reminds us how much the DOW has risen since those crazy days of Stratton Oakmont.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI want to thank Josh and Matt Altman and their team from The Altman Brothers for fully embracing their roles as extras. They brought exactly the energy that was needed that morning.
