The surface is built up using Slonem’s signature sgraffito technique — a dense network of scored vertical lines carved into the wet paint with the end of his brush — giving the metallic background a woven, almost textile-like texture that catches the light. Some butterflies are rendered in full, textured impasto; others appear only as graphic black outlines, creating a sense of movement and partial visibility across the composition. The piece reflects Slonem’s decades-long fascination with butterflies as a recurring motif in his Neo-Expressionist body of work.

Slonem’s butterfly paintings are held in over 50 museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. “Blue Ascension” is a striking example of his work in this series, combining painterly texture with a restrained, elegant palette.

Specifications

Artist: Hunt Slonem
Title: Blue XY
Medium: Oil on panel with Diamond dust
Size: 76cm x 91cm
Framing: Gold frame
Signed and dated by the artist, with certificate of authenticity

To arrange a private viewing or discuss this work, use the Enquire button or contact Scapegoat Gallery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0655/7201/2256/files/BlueXY-HuntSlonem-Website-ScapegoatGallery.jpg?v=1792411684
