About:
Hidden deep within the Mopane woodlands of Botswana lies a waterhole known only to those with the memory and instinct to find it. In the harsh stretch of the dry season, when each day feels like a wager against time, elephants travel great distances in search of these lifelines. On this day, in the searing month of November, a great bull emerged from the forest, his path carved by wisdom and years of survival.
Above him, clouds gathered in restless anticipation of the rains. The promise of relief hung in the air, yet the earth remained parched, awaiting a change that had not yet come. Against this backdrop of tension between drought and renewal, the bull approached.
He saw me then — a figure tucked behind the wide trunk of a Mopane tree. With a deliberate stillness, he lifted his head, tusks gleaming, body towering, a living emblem of power and command. For a moment that felt endless, he held my gaze. There was no fear, only recognition: I was in his realm, on his terms.
It was in that fleeting instant, as clouds swirled and the giant stood framed by his domain, that I captured the image. A portrait not only of an elephant, but of an ancient ruler, sovereign of the wild, carrying the dignity of generations before him.
