About:

From the air, the Okavango Delta reveals itself in ways the ground can never show. Its channels, lagoons, and floodplains create a living mosaic, a constantly shifting artwork of water and earth. On this day, I searched for a subject I have always found both fascinating and challenging — the hippopotamus.

Hippos are notoriously difficult to photograph. By nature, they are secretive, spending most of their lives submerged with little more than their eyes, ears, or nostrils breaking the surface. On land, they rarely offer elegance, moving with a bulk that seems far removed from beauty. But from above, I knew there was the possibility of something different — a chance to capture these ancient creatures not just as individuals, but as part of a greater composition.

After many flights across the Delta, the moment finally arrived. Below me, within a cradle of aquatic vegetation, a pod of hippos had gathered tightly together. From the ground, such a sight might have passed without notice, hidden by reeds and shadow. But from above, their formation was striking.

I knew as soon as I pressed the shutter that this was something rare. It was not simply a photograph of hippos, but of perspective — of the Delta offering up a glimpse of its hidden design. This is the gift of seeing from above: the chance to witness not only wildlife, but the patterns of life itself.
