Hantura by René Romero Schuler

“Hantura” (2026) is a large-scale original oil on canvas by René Romero Schuler, measuring 182.9cm x 152.4cm (72" x 60"). Schuler builds her canvases with trowels and palette knives in thick, sculptural layers of paint, and her striking figures explore identity and the search for ground. At this scale, the sculptural surface of the work makes a commanding statement. Her approach draws on the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s and ’60s.

Born in Chicago in 1968, Schuler began her career in interior design and decorative painting before devoting herself to fine art. Her work is held in museum collections and has been shown from Chicago to Paris, including at Art Miami and EXPO Chicago.
