During the months of winter in Botswana, elephants spend a good deal of time in the water feeding on aquatic vegetation. They cross from the land to smaller islands in search of whatever green food is still available, as the grip of the dry season strengthens. These are the moments I searched for, in order to capture a unique moment of an elephant in the water. But even so, I could not have imagine the photo I would get. An elephant bull started crossing towards a series of islands, and we managed to get our boat right out in front of it. As I always do, I got real low by hanging my camera over the ride of the boat. It’s a dangerous way to shoot as the Chobe River is home to very big crocodiles! With one eye on the water around me, and another tracking the elephants’ movements, I got in to the best position possible, right ahead of him. He was in deep water and this meant only a part of his head was showing, with eyes wide open. It was a terrific scene and show to capture!
