When jaguars hunt, they become shadows of precision. In the Pantanal, they turn the water to their advantage, masking their immense power beneath the surface. Some of these cats weigh as much as 150 kilograms, yet in the river they move with ghost-like ease, gliding toward unsuspecting prey such as caiman and capybara. Only the eyes, and sometimes the faint curve of a head, betray their presence before the inevitable strike.

To capture such a moment demands patience, instinct, and a willingness to get uncomfortably close. From a small boat, surrounded by swirling currents, I lean over the water with my camera, dipping the lens just above the surface. It’s risky — both for the gear and for me — but it’s the only way to achieve that true eye-level perspective.

Through that lens, everything changes. The world narrows to the jaguar’s eyes — cold focus, quiet calculation, raw purpose. In that instant, the photograph becomes more than a picture; it becomes an encounter.
