Blue XY by Hunt Slonem (Copy)

Blue XYis an original oil on panel painting by acclaimed American artist Hunt Slonem, measuring 76cm x 91cm

“Blue XY” is an original painting by acclaimed American artist Hunt Slonem, featuring eleven butterflies in cool blues and icy whites scattered across a shimmering silver ground. The surface is built up using Slonem’s signature sgraffito technique — a dense network of scored vertical lines carved into the wet paint with the end of his brush — giving the metallic background a woven, almost textile-like texture that catches the light. Some butterflies are rendered in full, textured impasto; others appear only as graphic black outlines, creating a sense of movement and partial visibility across the composition. The piece reflects Slonem’s decades-long fascination with butterflies as a recurring motif in his Neo-Expressionist body of work.

Slonem’s butterfly paintings are held in over 50 museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. “Blue Ascension” is a striking example of his work in this series, combining painterly texture with a restrained, elegant palette.
