The purpose of art is to wash the dust of daily life off our souls. Well, that’s what Picasso said at any rate. I guess he thought that what we do every day makes us dull and a little dirty.
Clearly, Picasso thought that our souls were tarnished from the drudgery of life, and that art could make the inner workings of our consciousness sparkle and shine. I must say I find some of Picasso’s early work a little depressing. All those emaciated clowns and poverty stricken families going nowhere, hardly open the gates of joy, flooding one’s heart with desire for living. If I am anything, I’m probably a classical artist in the truest sense — more attracted to the battle between destiny and human choice than merely being a little artist lost in the woods.
I prefer to be adrift in the beautiful universe as, a kind of Major Tom, or as a Star Child forever open to possibilities, than a jaded someone looking for a way to polish my dirty old soul. Otherwise I really avoid buying sweets made out of animal gelatine. There’s someth ing nasty about eating hooves mixed with sugar and food colouring, and believing that it’s suddenly a brighter day.
