Down on the ground on all fours, I crawled towards a pack of wild dogs in Mana Pools. It was 2012, and it was my first visit to a place that would become like a second home to me. Wild dogs on foot, it’s a special experience, and I wanted to get as close as I could, without disturbing the pack. I made steady progress, one movement at a time. After nearly 30 minutes there was about 50 meters separating us, and I waited and shot a few photos. Nothing stood out to me, and I thought I’d move just a little closer. Then, all of a sudden, the alpha male got up, and started walking directly at me. His head was low, his ears were forward. He meant business. I stayed down to present a submissive posture, but I knew he meant no harm. It was more curiosity than anything else. The alpha male lay down not ten meters from me. It was surreal. The sun had just set, and I found myself in true wilderness, in the company of one of the most special animals in all of Africa. That’s when I took one of my favourite images.
